Hey folks. Happy spring! I know I’m not the only one who’s thrilled to finally be having some warm, gorgeous weather. Here at Roots for Life we hope you’re getting to enjoy fresh air and some sweet spring-time nourishments.
Holidays have come and gone, but that winter chill still lingers. As we don boots and coats, rain and, even some snow here and there, has peppered January with its usual frigid nip. Luckily, there are plenty of seasonal vegetables that whether baked or sautéed can warm you up in no time.
Last month, we were with the ladies at Hyacinth’s Place here in Washington, D.C. And during our time together, we made this most delicious dinner a sweet and savory stuffed acorn squash. Our volunteer, Kelly Jung, pictured to the right, was on hand talking with the ladies about the nutritional value of ingredients we used.
Society likes to tell you that you have two choices when it comes to eating. You can either eat healthier and spend more money or you can eat unhealthier and spend less. But in actuality, you can do both! You can eat healthier and not go over your budget. Eating healthier is as simple as adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet. It’s not an unattainable feat, no matter the family size or budget, everyone can eat healthier.

Food insecurity is a “lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members” (Feeding America, 2015). Food insecurity exists in every county in America, and in Washington, D.C., food-insecure areas make up about 11 percent of the total area.
We have two days for getting deals—Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, we have #GivingTuesday, a day dedicated to giving back.
Too often, and for a myriad of reasons, we rely on processed foods full of man-made chemicals that deteorite our health; so many diseases and cancers are a direct result of these processed meats, sugars and other cheap synthetic foods.
